Professional activities and areas of interest
Clay Steven Dedeaux, Associate Professor, joins us from the Advertising, Public Relations and Retailing department at Michigan State University where he also earned his doctorate in Media & Information Studies from the College of Communication Arts & Sciences. Clay worked for large international advertising agencies, raising over the course of a nearly 30 year career to the position of Senior Vice President, Management Supervisor at Arnold Worldwide, an integrated communication firm based in Boston, and owned by Havas Communications in Paris. Clay specialized in automotive advertising in service to clients including Bavarian Motor Werks at Ammirati & Puris-NYC, Mercedes-Benz of North America at McCaffrey & McCall-NYC, and Volkswagen of America/Bentley Motors, Inc. at Arnold Worldwide-Boston. Dr. Dedeaux completed his coursework towards the Ph.D. in mass media at Michigan State University while employed. Advertising undergraduate students comment positively on the advertising agency experience that he brings to the classroom. Dr. Dedeaux’s research interest represents a dramatic departure from the profit driven world of advertising for luxury automobiles, and is now focused on creating communication strategies for philanthropic nonprofit organizations. Clay’s research is focused on donor’s cognitive processing of messages that advocate for recipients who are socially near or distant, as is the case of a charitable appeal for a domestic as compared to international cause. Dr. Dedeaux is particularly interested in sociologically and philosophically grounded communications research that promotes ethnic diversity and open society in which immigrants are allowed to contribute their best skills for the benefit of their host society.
